That perches in the soul. These words, written long ago by a favorite poet of mine, ring in my ears. They ring true and loud, strong and certain, hopeful. Hope. It is the thing with feathers. It perches in the soul. It doesn’t sit, it doesn’t lie down, it doesn’t run away. It perches. It waits to lift your soul in the hard times, to pick you up and carry you further. You can, it tells you, You will, I know it. It is the thing that is left when all others seem to have gone. It is patient and sure. It is enough, this hope. The thing with feathers. It somehow is always enough. To move us where we need to be or prepare us for the next thing. To keep us looking up, to make us perch. It is terrifying when we lose it. When the feathers have gone, when they’ve flown away and there’s no more perching. It is dark and cold and heavy without it. Hold onto it, friend. We all need it. This hope. Hold it, keep it close, perching in your soul. It may take the name of family or friends or children or Savior or redemption or forgiveness, whatever gives you hope. Find it and keep it. The thing with feathers. That keeps singing to your soul and never stops. It is yours, for you are so worth it. You are beautiful and strong, faithful and kind, hopefully hopeful. Keep looking up. Keep perching. This is hope. This is yours. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. – Romans 5:1-5 Written by Sarah
